Introduction
I was thrilled to lead the UX/UI redesign of a neo-banking mobile application specifically tailored for young working professionals in India. This project presented a unique opportunity to leverage the rising smartphone penetration in the country and address the unmet need for a user-friendly and personalized financial management tool. My goal was to create an intuitive and engaging app that would empower this demographic to take control of their finances with confidence.
- Project Name: Neo-Bank Mobile App Redesign
- Role: UX/UI Designer
- Duration: January 2023 – November 2023
- Team Size: 5
- Tools Used: Figma, Miro, Maze
Problem Statement
While neo-banks are gaining traction globally, many Indian working professionals remained hesitant to adopt them. My research revealed two primary issues: a lack of user-friendly interfaces tailored to their specific needs and a general lack of trust in digital financial platforms. Existing apps were often complex, visually overwhelming, and lacked the personalized touch essential for building user confidence and trust.
Objectives and Goals
My primary objective was to create a neo-banking app that addressed these pain points. Specifically, I aimed to: Increase user engagement by at least 25%. Reduce the onboarding drop-off rate from 35% to below 15%. Improve the task success rate for core financial tasks (payments, transfers, investments) to over 90%. Achieve an average System Usability Scale (SUS) score of at least 80.
Research and Insights
I conducted extensive user research, incorporating both quantitative and qualitative methods. This included: Surveys administered to over 150 working professionals in major Indian cities. In-depth interviews with 20 users to understand their financial habits and pain points. Competitor analysis of existing neo-banking apps in the Indian market.I also utilized Reddit to gather insights and feedback from users. This helped me develop detailed user personas representing different segments within my target audience.
Ideation and Concept Development
Based on my research, I developed several design concepts, focusing on creating a visually appealing and intuitive interface. My designs emphasized: A clear and concise information architecture to ensure ease of navigation. Visually engaging elements that would capture and maintain user interest. Personalization options tailored to individual user profiles.I conducted several rounds of iterative testing and incorporated user feedback into each iteration.
Design Process
My design process followed a structured approach: 1. Wireframing: I created low-fidelity wireframes to establish the core layout and functionality. 2. Prototyping: I used Figma to create high-fidelity prototypes to test the user interface. 3. Visual Design: I focused on creating a clean, modern, and approachable design with bright colours and bold typography. 4. User Testing: I conducted usability testing with 14 participants using Maze, focusing on key tasks such as onboarding, loan applications, and payments. 5. Iteration: I incorporated feedback from usability testing to improve the design and enhance user experience. Based on testing, I redesigned elements such as the onboarding process, payment screen, and investment portfolio view.
Challenges and Solutions
Simplifying complex financial features for first-time users was my biggest challenge. To overcome this, I focused on creating micro-interactions and animations, and used simple, clear language for all instructions and labels. I also developed a series of onboarding tutorials to guide users through the app’s core features. Continuous user testing was crucial in identifying and resolving usability issues early in the design process.
Final Outcome
The redesigned app significantly improved key metrics. The onboarding drop-off rate decreased from 35% to 10%, and the task success rate for core features increased to over 85%. User engagement metrics also showed a substantial improvement, with users spending more time on the app and actively using the savings and investment tools. Post-launch feedback was extremely positive, indicating a much more user-friendly and intuitive experience. The redesign successfully reduced user confusion and error rates. The application received an SUS score of 88.
Learnings and Reflections
This project reinforced the importance of user-centric design. Through the iterative process of user testing and design refinement, I gained invaluable insights into user behavior and preferences. I learned that creating a simple, intuitive, and visually appealing interface is crucial for driving user adoption, especially in the finance industry. In the future, I would further focus on integrating AI-powered features and improving personalization to create an even more engaging and adaptive experience.
Conclusion
The redesigned neo-banking app successfully met its objectives, significantly improving user engagement, task success rates, and overall user satisfaction. The project demonstrated the power of user-centered design to create impactful financial technology solutions that empower users. Future work will focus on exploring additional personalization options, integrating advanced features, and conducting ongoing usability testing to ensure the app remains relevant and valuable for its users.
